A Program Like No Other

Neon Clear is more than just an after-school program; it's a movement towards holistic development. As a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization, our mission is to ignite the spark of curiosity and foster a love for learning in every student. We welcome all middle schoolers to join our community where education meets adventure, and every challenge is a new opportunity.

By popular demand, we are going to try something new this year! We are going to combine our classic Neon Clear format with our POD format. This means that for the 1st Trimester, we will be going deep with no time limits on the subjects. Then, in the 2nd Trimester, we will reintroduce PODs, but the PODs will all be picked by the students. Finally, in 3rd Trimester, we will try out a new hybrid format where we will allow deep discussions with PODs. It should be a very exciting year.

This year, we are going to start with a few cutting edge new topics:

1) EMERGENCE - When lots of simple things follow simple rules, they can create something complex and surprising that none of them could make alone, like how ants with no leader can build a massive colony, or how individual cells make up a thinking brain.

2) The introduction of Mason 2.0 (CLICK HERE TO SEE THE NEW MASON). Back in 2023, students at Christensen Middle School created an LLM from first principles. The LLM believed it was an actual student and called itself Mason. A year later, the source material we used to train Mason (library of congress, wikipedia, etc) was discontinued for educational purposes and we had to retire Mason. Well, Mason is back and he now has a face and body and lives on as an AI avatar who will now serve as a learning partner during some of our sessions.

3) Exoplanets - Following up on last year's astrophysics unit, this year students will learn about exoplanets, what they are and how we can detect them. We will even create our own software to analyze actual NASA data to see if we might be able to find our own!

4) We are going to try to partner with a cutting edge company located in the Bay Area to make Livermore middle schools the first to use CRISPR gene editing to change the genome of bacteria, making it glow in the dark!

5) And, we will bring back several of our classic Neon Clear programs that students have been asking for over the past two years.
